Who doesn’t love the legendary Golf R hot hatch, all wheel drive, 2 litre turbo and an exhaust crackle that leaves a grin from ear to ear. Only this one was different “it’s a wagon” the owner proudly proclaimed, seriously..? I thought the hot hatch only came in well, a hatch.
The client has had several car’s paint protected with Opti Coat Pro + in the past so was no stranger to the benefits its provides such as the self cleaning effect, the chemical resistance, the hydrophobic properties, the amazing gloss and the general breeze of maintenance that comes with such a coating.
A tight time frame for afternoon collection was agreed upon because lets face it we’re all busy and need our wheels, the fact that it was brand new and white had me thinking that this Opti Coat Paint Protection detail would be a breeze.
I’m never that lucky! once the Golf was dropped off to my garage at Port Adelaide the first thing that was immediately apparent was this car has been dealership detailed, and I use that term rather loosely. Exhibit A white polish residue all over the rubber trims surrounding the windows.
Around 45 minutes of scrubbing later with meguiars all purpose cleaner the rubbers looked new again and it was time to proceed to wash and clay to see what other suprises were in store.
The wheels were treated to 3D BDX which showed the level of contamination still apparent on a vehicle this new, for those that don’t know BDX is an iron fallout remover similar to Iron X, Optimum ferrex etc. It breaks down iron contamination and the chemical reaction turns a bright purple to show the level of contamination it is removing. This is so useful as a detailer as it gives an indication as to where the most heavily contaminated areas are, so I can avoid claying areas that maybe don’t need it.
Washed and clayed it was time for a visual inspection, with the paint looking good I went with Scholl S30 on a red finishing pad.
There were quite a few swirls in the side window trims, which needed to be machine corrected to present the car how I would want it to be presented rolling out of the dealership.
More deeper scratches were located on both of the tail lights so again machine correction was required.
With all the correction sorted it was onto an IPA wipe down and laying down the Opti Coat base layer, the second + layer needs to be applied over the top within 30 minutes to start the chemical reaction that forms the Silicon Carbide Coating SiC that is Opti Coat Pro +. The majority of other coatings on the market are a silica base that suspends silica inside the resin to form the coating rather than using a chemical reaction, I will cover this in another post.
Finally some finished shots of the Opti Coat paint protection coating, producing a deep glossy white pearl, protected for years.
